An Ack-tree Creation Mechanism Using Top-down Scheme for Tree-based Reliable Multicast Transport Protocols

چکیده
To meet the requirements of various applications such as software distributions, shared text editors, etc., reliable transmission should be guaranteed over IP Multicast where only best-effort service is supported. Among the current researches, hierarchical tree-based mechanism has been proposed and actively studied. This mechanism is known to provide high scalability, but needs to build an efficient logical ACK-tree in transport layer. Many studies have been made, and bottom-up approach has been mainly used. This approach has benefits from parallel tree construction for receivers, while it brings large message overhead. Therefore, this paper proposes a top-down based mechanism which reduce the message overhead during tree creating process and can simply guarantee loop-freeness by step-wise mannered tree building. Through experimental simulations, it shows that the proposed mechanism has less message overhead, while the bottom-up scheme has better performance on tree configuration time in a large session. So, it is recommended that the top-down and bottom-up schemes will be selectively used in the real world, according to the requirements of the concerned multicast applications.

Sender-initiated Configuration of an ACK-Tree for Reliable Multicast Transport
Tree-based ACK mechanism for reliable multicast service is well-known to provide high scalability as well as reliability. However, it should be followed an efficient ACK-Tree construction mechanism. The ERS(Expanding Ring Search) mechanism which is a receiver-driven bottom-up approach has been mainly used to construct an ACK-tree. However, it is known to cause heavy message overhead and to have...

Seok Joo Koh et al. 111 For scalable multicast transport, one of the promising approaches is to employ a control tree known as acknowledgement (ACK) tree which can be used to convey information on reliability and session status from receivers to a root sender. The existing tree configuration has focused on a ‘bottom-up’ scheme in which ACK trees grow from leaf receivers toward a root sender. Th...

For Reliable Multicast Service, to use tree hierarchy can be a promising solution to avoid well-known ACKimplosion. However, to build an efficient ACK-tree is very difficult for IP Multicast because it does not provide explicit membership and routing topology information to upper layer protocol. Due to the difficulties, not much study has been done on the control tree configuration yet, while i...

A great variety of todays networked applications require a reliable multicast service. A number of the proposed reliable multicast protocols use a positive acknowledgment scheme, which returns ACKs to the sender to confirm correct delivery. To avoid the well-known implosion problem in the case of large receiver groups, often a tree-based approach is used, i.e., receivers are organized in a tree...
